Description
Painted on paper this image depicts a three-eyed monster confronting the viewer with crossed sabers. He has pointy, gruesome teeth, and long fingers. His grey skin and the black line of the figure are in direct contrast to the bright Venetian color palate of the scene. Maybe these swords dripping with crimson are stained with blood; the victims of those who stood here gazing before? He is challenging the viewer to become the Hero of the scene. Will the viewer rise and be the savior in the eye of the imprisoned lady who awaits with a cool drink from her bucket as a prize? Surely this is the image preceding the final battle at the end of a quest.
Above a poem titled Venetian Theseus is included as an echo, memento and reverberation. Written by the artist at nearly the same time as the paintings creation, it echos the sentiments of being lost, finding your way against hopeless odds, and navigating the dark and challenging moments of a quest; the moments that test and define our character. Look into this mirror and see who you truly are.
